English as a Second Language (ESL)

San Clemente’s students from non-English speaking backgrounds are assisted on a weekly basis by a teacher assigned to the staff. Students whose English is very limited receive intensive language assistance in the basic communication skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students with more experience in English receive support in language across the curriculum, either in small groups or one-to-one.  There are a number of African students studying here, who have arrived in Australia as refugees.

Homework centre

As an extension of our work with the African community, San Clemente hold a home-work centre on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Supported by the Migrant Resource Centre, this facility aims to further assist the students with their school- work. They have the opportunity to work on home-work, assignments, reading, writing or any other areas with which they may need help. It is particularly helpful when exams are looming for some last minute revision!

We also have computer classes, where the students learn different aspects of using a computer, including power point presentations, internet usage, email and typing skills. Many research projects require competent computer skills and this is an avenue in which we can offer help to the students.

The homework centre has provided us a chance to learn about where the students have come from. We now know about the history of their countries, where they went to school, their national anthem and we catch up on the news through online newspapers. The homework centre does not only educate the students!

It is run by Mrs Leanne White, who is the head ESL teacher at the Intensive English Centre (IEC) at San Clemente. We also have volunteers who come in on a regular basis, mainly from the University of Newcastle, and we are very appreciative of the time and skills they bring to the Centre.

These are some interactive sites that may help with skill development.
