Our School

San Clemente High School is a Catholic co-educational junior secondary school in the suburb of Mayfield, Newcastle, and is part of the Maitland Newcastle Diocese.  Its professional and committed teaching staff is devoted to the development of excellence of each student in the context of a caring community. San Clemente enrols students primarily from the parishes of Waratah, Mayfield, Mayfield West, Tighes Hill, Stockton, Nelson Bay, Bulahdelah, Raymond Terrace  and Shortland. This is an area in excess of three hundred square kilometres.

In addition San Clemente caters for students who graduate from St Dominic's Centre for the Hearing Impaired, and for this purpose formed a unit for integration of hearing impaired students into general classes in 1980.  Another integration unit to meet the individual education requirements of special needs students was formed in 1990 and this unit enrols students from parishes both inside and outside the enrolment zone.

San Clemente also provides a limited number of places for overseas students.  Currently San Clemente has 557 students from twenty four cultural backgrounds, and students from non-English speaking backgrounds are supported in the school.  Many were born in Australia but are being encouraged to study the languages of their cultural origins through school courses.

Special Nature of the School

The rich cultural heritage of its students and its links to Dominican spirituality make San Clemente unique among the junior secondary schools of the diocese.  The school operates out of an evolving and dynamic culture of honesty and respect. Respect for the human person in students, parents, clergy, staff and others in the wider community; respect for creation and the environment locally, nationally and globally and respect for the Church and the Gospel Values to which we aspire.

A Quality Learning Environment

San Clemente structures courses to meet the requirements of the NSW Board of Studies for the award of the NSW School Certificate. Students are challenged to reach full potential academically.

Fees and Charges

In common with the other secondary schools in the diocese San Clemente charges fees as set by the Catholic Schools Office. An additional Technology fee is also charged to ensure that our students have access to the latest computer resources. A fee is charged for students involved in practical subjects to cover the consumable materials used. Concessions on tuition fees are available to those families who feel there is genuine need. An interview with the Principal is required.

Progression

Students graduating in Year 10 are encouraged to enrol at St Francis Xavier's College, Hamilton.

Many more details about the day to day life of the school can be found in the Student Handbook.
